First steps into German Language - Lesson 1

Dear Bloggers,

this article is about the German language.
At the end of it, you'll know some facts about German language, German people and the German history!
Have fun!

Most German people speak a dialect. It is a very funny fact that someone who is living at the Baltic Sea can hardly understand someone living in Munich near to the alps! (German spelling for Munich: München)
Munich is a very big city at Bayern.
Bayern is famous for the "Lederhosen", leather trousers in English. But just in Bayern!! Not in Berlin or Hamburg or somewhere else in Germany!
Many people say that Germans cannot smile or laugh. That's wrong and right. Everywhere at our blue planet there are people with different characters and humour. But I can say it is right, too! It has something to do with our history.
Maybe you know that Germany was divided (right word?) into two halves with a big wall for fourty years. Especcially for East Germany, the GDR, it was a very hard time. They were not allowed to visit their relatives in West Germany, it was forbidden to express their oppinion, they had no religious freedom and could be arrested very fast.
If I watch the Oscars in the internet and the speeches of the winners I can say: I laugh about the jokes but I do say that many Germans would just smile or not even smile. Why? I don't know.
But Germans can laugh and smile! I am the first one who can say this! ;)
Germany was reunificated in 1989. Yeah! Some people said that it would take 20 years to reunificate Germany in all facets. It didn't! But there are some jokes about the west Germans ("Wessies" from Westen (the west) and the east Germans("Ossies" from Osten (the east).
Germany is famous for its many sausages. I do not know why but I think it is very funny!

The German language has four letters which are not in the English language:
ä - Spell it like the"a" in "have"
ö - Please translate the english word "oil" in an online translator and listen to the german pronunciation.
ü - Please translate the english word "over" in an online translator and listen to the german pronunciation.
ß - it is called the "esszett". It is a harder "s".

Now some simple word groups, please use an online translator for the pronunciation (my tip: www.linguee.com).

I am - Ich bin
You are - Du bist
He, she, it is - Er, sie, es ist
We are - Wir sind
You are - Ihr seid
They are - Sie sind

But for building a sentence you need some adjectives:

pretty - schön
kind - nett
friendly - freundlich
tired - müde
young - jung
old - alt

Examples:     Ich bin schön.
                    Wir sind alt.

Now you can make your first German sentences! Have fun!
